Beginning this fall, St. Bonaventure students can go to one centralized spot to find out about the many student engagement resources available to them on campus.
The platform, called “Bonnies Connect,” is an app students can download right to their smartphones. This free app is available to students and the entire university community in the Apple and Google Play Store.
“On average, students spend nearly four hours a day on their smart phones. By reaching our students where they are, this app will help students engage in all of the co-curricular opportunities and resources available to them,” said Robbie Chulick, assistant director of the Center for Activities, Recreation and Leadership.
From calendars, to events and co-curricular groups, the app quickly enables students to answer the question “What’s happening on campus?” Bonnies Connect also offers a real-time outlet for students to ask and answer questions, the ability to access on-demand resources 24/7, and the ability to have one-on-one and group conversations within the app.
“With so many things happening on campus, it can be easy to miss out on events or forget what is happening and when. Bonnies Connect allows users to see everything going on while also allowing departments on campus an easy-to-use space to get the word out and advertise,” said Ryan Signorino, a senior intern with the First-Year Experience program.
For example, users can scroll through a calendar of upcoming events, indicate they plan to attend, and add the details to their personal agenda with a couple clicks. The app can also be synched with Google Calendar or Facebook accounts.
Students, staff and faculty can download the app and login using their SBU credentials (username and password you use to log into My.SBU).
St. Bonaventure parents and other guests can create an account as well. The platform is being supported by various departments, including the Center for Student Activities, First-Year Experience, Student Success Center, Career and Professional Readiness Center, Wellness Center, Residence Life, University Ministries, Athletics, and Academic Affairs. Assistance in launching the app was also provided by Technology Services and the Office of Marketing and Communications.
The app was first introduced at Freshman Orientation to the Class of 2022, whereby students and families accessed their entire orientation schedules via the app. The Welcome Days itinerary will also be hosted on the app.
Chris Brown, director of the First-Year Experience program, said, “One great benefit of using the Bonnies Connect app during Orientation and Welcome Days is that the schedules can be customized for each student. This reduced confusion when students attended workshops in different locations based on their major, residence hall, or orientation leader.”
The Bonnies Connect app was designed by Involvio, a company specializing in digital platforms supporting student engagement. This product is used by thousands of college students on campuses across the United States, Canada and Australia.
Rob DeFazio, director of the Center for Activities, Recreation and Leadership, said the app is a communication tool students have specifically requested.
“Through the collaboration of many departments on campus we are excited to roll this out to the students and university community. Every student-related event and program can now be accessed instantaneously,” DeFazio said.
