How many recyclables are thrown in campus Dumpsters? Tread Lightly, an environmental group at St. Bonaventure, plans to find out Monday.
As part of Recyclemania, a Dumpster Dump will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 31.Tarps will be laid out on a portion of Plassmann Plaza, and members of Tread Lightly will sort through garbage from various Dumpsters across campus.
In the United States, each person produces 4.6 pounds of trash per day, much of which could be recycled. Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, three cubic yards of landfill space, two barrels of oil and 4,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. This is enough energy to power the average American home for five months.
The purpose of the Dumpster Dump event is to create a visual of the items thrown away on the St. Bonaventure campus that should instead be recycled. Anyone wanting to learn more about this event or get involved can contact Sr. Suzanne Kush, C.S.S.F., at firstname.lastname@example.org.
