St. Bonaventure Band, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers to present Christmas Concert

Nov 29, 2016 | The music program at St. Bonaventure University will present its annual Christmas Concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts’ Rigas Family Theater.

The concert, which is free and open to all, will feature performances by the university’s Concert Band, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers.

The Concert Band, directed by Dr. Leslie Sabina, professor of music and chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, will perform several medleys of traditional Christmas songs arranged by master concert band composers James Ployhar and John Warrington, as well as a medley of songs from “The Polar Express.”

Instrumental soloists include Laurieanne Wickens on trumpet; Deeanna Welling, flute; Sarah Garraffo, alto sax; and Alex Mazanek, French horn.

The Chamber Singers, directed by artist-in-residence Kathryn A. Black, will perform two seasonal selections: Irving Berlin’s “Snow” from the movie “White Christmas,” and “A Soulin’,” a traditional piece arranged by Black. The latter features students Michele Onofrio on flute, Daniel Cowan and Jory Olson on guitars, and Noelle Acaso, Samantha Johnson, and Issac Rys on hand bells.

The 30-member Concert Choir, also directed by Black, will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” featuring students Julie Curran and Lena Young as soloists throughout the work’s 12 sections.

The singing groups will be accompanied by pianist Laura Peterson, a lecturer in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts
