St. Bonaventure University’s Model United Nations team earned second-place honors at the Lake Erie International Model UN Conference, held Nov. 8-11 in Huron, Ohio.
By simulating the United Nations, the goal of Model UN is to educate delegates about current affairs and international relations, enhance research skills, and provide outlets to hone effective written and oral communications. During the conference, participants were judged based on how well they represented the interests of different countries on United Nations committees and organizations.
Members of the St. Bonaventure team who attended the conference were Daniel Bakowski, Geoffrey Broadbent, Ilando Capolino, Richard Carroll, Brian Casey, Zayba Chauhdry, Rachel Collins, Ian Coyne, Terry Dankambary, Taylor Elliott, August Fallon, Grace Ferris, Matthew Fockler, Jordan Golden-Arabaty, Isabelle Labarbera, Lara McCormick, Jiyah Mentley-Peters, Donovan Moffre-Barnes, Alexander Olday, Noah Pfeiffer, Zoya Rafi, Bilawal Rafi-Iqbal, Emily Slade, Luke Smith, Brendan Thompson, Jacob Van Patten, Andrew Wawro, and Bohan Yu.
Of the 26 St. Bonaventure students who competed at the conference, several took home individual awards.
Six SBU students received Excellence Awards, Rachel Collins, Daniel Bakowski, Andrew Wawro, Alex Olday, and Donovan Moffre-Barnes, and one student, Ian Coyne, received a Superior Award. Two St. Bonaventure students, Brendan Thompson and Geoffrey Broadbent, were honored for distinguished work on their committees, receiving their committee chairs’ gavels.
Dr. Ibrahim Zabad, associate professor of political science, is the club’s adviser and instructor for the class, praised the students’ accomplishments and commended the leadership of Broadbent, who is the Secretary General of the Model United Nations Club.
“He did a superb job in guiding the club to this achievement,” Zabad said.
More than 200,000 middle school, high school, and college students participate annually in Model UN conferences across the globe.
