Senior Carlie Jacque and junior Eamonn Matthews were honored this spring with the inaugural Jim Canty Awards.
The awards are given to a St. Bonaventure University rugby player from the women’s and men’s teams who embody what the 1984 alumnus stood for: strong academics, community, giving back, passion for St. Bonaventure, leadership, teamwork and a positive attitude.
Jacque, from Horseheads, N.Y., graduated in May with a degree in elementary and special education and will return in the fall to pursue a master’s degree in childhood literacy.
“Carlie is one of those players who inspires me to be a better coach,” said Clarence Picard, head coach of the women’s team. “She believes in the power of St. Bonaventure, and the sport of rugby, to improve people’s lives. Carlie provides leadership both on and off the field.”
Jacque had the highest grade point average on the team and started every match the past two seasons, Picard said.
A finance major from Jersey City, N.J., Matthews just finished his junior year. Both Matthews and Jacque played scrum half.
“Eamonn leads by example in all aspects of our program. He represents what Jim Canty stood for, especially his passion for St. Bonaventure rugby,” said Tui Osborne, men’s head coach.
Canty died of brain cancer in 2017. A university trustee from 2011 until his death, he played rugby at St. Bonaventure and was the program’s biggest supporter.
Canty saw the potential for rugby to enhance the university’s enrollment and strongly advocated for enhanced support to grow both the men’s and women’s rugby programs.
