SiriusXM CEO Jim Meyer will deliver the keynote address May 13 at St. Bonaventure University’s 158th Commencement ceremony.
A 1976 graduate of St. Bonaventure with a degree in economics, Meyer has been at SiriusXM since 2004. Meyer also completed his MBA at St. Bonaventure in 1979.
Meyer is among three people who will receive honorary degrees at Commencement. Also being honored are John and Kay Meisch, longtime benefactors of the university.
“Jim has reached stratospheric heights in a remarkable business career, but he never forgot his roots and we’re so grateful for that,” said Dr. Dennis DePerro, university president. “He was an extremely respected voice and generous benefactor on our Board of Trustees for a decade, and he’s opened so many doors for our students through summer internships at SiriusXM.”
SiriusXM is the largest radio broadcaster when measured by revenue with 33.1 million paid subscribers and a listenership of almost double that number. Meyer is also a member of the Board of Directors at SiriusXM Holdings Inc.
Meyer oversees all aspects of the company’s operations from its New York City corporate headquarters. SiriusXM creates and offers channels of commercial-free music, premier sports, live events, news and comedy, exclusive talk and entertainment, Spanish-language Latin music, sports and talk programming.
Meyer served on St. Bonaventure’s Board of Trustees for 10 years, completing his term in 2017, and co-chaired the Presidential Search Committee that hired Dr. Dennis R. DePerro, the university’s 21st president.
Prior to joining SiriusXM, Meyer was president of Aegis Ventures. Before joining Aegis, he held a number of senior management positions in consumer electronics over a 25-year period for Thomson, a worldwide leader in consumer electronics, General Electric and RCA.
Meyer is chairman of the Board of Directors of TiVo Corp., a global leader in entertainment technology and audience insights. He was also board chair at Rovi Corp. prior to its merger with TiVo. He is also a member of the Board of Directors at Pandora Media Inc.
In April 2018, he joined Michael Shank Racing in an ownership role, creating Meyer Shank Racing, which competes in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the MSR Verizon IndyCar Series.
His wife, Nina, earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from St. Bonaventure in 1979. The Meyers have three children.
John Meisch, a 1958 graduate of St. Bonaventure, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social science and enjoyed a long and successful career with Ridge Lumber of Rochester, retiring in 1991.
Kay Meisch graduated from Keuka College and spent 33 years as a highly regarded and award-winning chemistry teacher at R.L. Thomas High School in Webster, N.Y., where she inspired scores of students with her energy, intelligence and compassion.
For more than two decades, they have been the principal patrons of the annual Francis Week celebration, funding the Fr. Jerome Kelly Francis Week speaker.
They helped fund the establishment of Clare College, and their philanthropy has aided the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts dance program, the renovation of the women’s basketball locker room in Reilly Center, the Mountain on the Road program run jointly by Mt. Irenaeus and Alumni Services, as well as the activities endowment for Students in Free Enterprise (now Enactus) and the university’s general endowment.
They also host alumni and presidential events at their homes in Rushville and in Arcadia, Calif.
The Meisches have long been active alumni with their respective alma maters. John served on St. Bonaventure’s National Alumni Association Board and in 2008 was named Alumnus of the Year. He is also a member of the university’s Seraphim Legacy and Devereux Giving societies.
Kay has been active with the Keuka College Alumni Association, serving as vice president of the Finance Committee and the Nominations Committee, and has served on the Keuka College Board of Trustees for 25 years. She was named to the list of Distinguished Alumni by the Commission on Independent Colleges & Universities in New York State in 2002.
Last year, the Meisches were honored as the Outstanding Philanthropists by the Association of Fundraising Professionals in the greater Rochester area.
