The Office of Marketing and Communications is located on the second floor of Francis Hall on the East End of campus. During the academic year, our office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Summer hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Some 250 area high school students will come to SBU to show off their communication skills and learn new ones Friday at the Jandoli School of Communication’s annual CommDay.
The university will welcome students from Alfred-Almond, Brocton, Eisenhower, Frewsburg, Gowanda, Hammondsport, Jamestown, Niagara Wheatfield, North Collins, Johnsonburg, Lake Shore, Salamanca, Southwestern, and Tapestry Charter school. The students and their advisers will participate in a number of workshops and also present their own work in a competition of writing, photography and videography on the topic of “Forget the Fake, Focus on the Facts.”
“This year’s topic couldn’t be more timely and I am very excited to see what the students from the surrounding area have to show us,” said Pauline Hoffmann, Ph.D., dean of the Jandoli School.
Students will showcase their work in the university’s Friedsam Library, where each group will have poster boards, videos and other displays to present to the judges and other attendees.
“It’s exciting to show off the Jandoli School of Communication to high schoolers and show them what we have to offer. The high school students will have an opportunity to bring in projects that will be judged by professionals in the field,” said Taylor Walker, a senior journalism and mass communication major.
Students will be encouraged throughout the day to use their phones and interact online on Twitter and other social media platforms.
Communications Day started as Press Day in 1936. Its purpose was to expose students to media professionals and give them a taste of the excitement a career in journalism can bring. Although the name has changed, the purpose of CommDay has not: It has just gotten bigger and a lot more creative, interactive and exciting, say organizers.
The workshops being offered by Jandoli School faculty include:
