Emma Stappenbeck of Rochester will reflect on what it’s like being a Bonnie when she addresses her classmates and guests as the student speaker during St. Bonaventure University’s 157th Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 14.
The BBA candidate is majoring in marketing with an English minor.
A graduate of Bishop Kearney High School, Stappenbeck is a daughter of Grif and Amy Stappenbeck and Melissa DeSain, and a granddaughter of Beth Stappenbeck, all of Rochester.
A member of the women’s club soccer team for four years, Stappenbeck served as captain this year.
“The girls I met my first year really took me under their wing and showed me the ropes, but throughout the last few years being able to do that and bring the younger girls under my wing has been extremely fulfilling,” she said.
She has also served as an orientation leader, tutor and Bonathon caller during her time on campus.
Stappenbeck chose marketing as a major “because I have always been a people person” and chose St. Bonaventure because it felt like home.
“I felt like the school chose me,” she said. “I was extremely unsure where I wanted to go, and as decision day grew closer I distinctly remember a little voice in my head telling me Bonaventure. So, I followed my gut instinct and have zero regrets about it.”
Stappenbeck, a dean’s list student, is enrolled in the Students in Money Management (SIMM) course this semester, which provides students with firsthand experience managing a real investment portfolio, and is also a member of the American Marketing Association organization on campus.
She has held two internships in Rochester. As a retail management intern with CVS Health last summer, Stappenbeck gained exposure in District Sales Management, Pharmacy Operations, Human Resources, and Training and Loss Prevention. The previous year she was a project management intern with Prosper Marketing and Branding, where she completed marketing research, managed social media content and devised new branding for local companies and non-profits.
Stappenbeck plans to pursue her MBA at St. Bonaventure and has accepted a graduate assistantship in the School of Education for the 2017-18 academic year. Following completion of her MBA, she plans to work for CVS Health’s Retail Management Program, with hopes of heading into their marketing department to focus on consumer research. Eventually she would like to run her own marketing/branding business.
St. Bonaventure’s Commencement weekend begins Friday, May 12, with a Candlelight Induction Ceremony at 8:45 p.m. on the steps of Plassmann Hall. Commencement Exercises begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Reilly Center Arena.
