    Dr. Scott Simpson
    (?)

    Simpson
    Assistant Professor, Chemistry
    (?)

Dr. Scott Simpson has been awarded a research grant from the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund (ACS PRF) for his grant titled "Using Density Functional Theory to Predict Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Selective Formation of cis-2-butene from 1,2-butadiene." The Petroleum Research Fund is an endowed fund that supports fundamental research directly related to petroleum or fossil fuels at nonprofit institutions. The goal of Simpson's research is to develop new heterogeneous catalysts to produce chemicals in a more inexpensive way. The grant totals $55,000.

Simpson and his research student, Alexandra Izydorczak, had an article published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Chemical Education. The article investigates how linearly polarized light interacts with amino acids under neutral and acidic conditions, otherwise known as the CLJ rule. Additionally, the study provides educators around the globe with tested materials to be used in their classrooms. The Leo E. Keenan Faculty Endowment supported the purchase of all materials and equipment to conduct the study. These funds were made available through a $2 million gift from Leslie C. and Eileen Quick III.

Simpson and his colleagues had their article titled "Electrochemical Atomic Force Microscopy and First Principles Calculations of Ferriprotoporphyrin Adsorption and Polymerization" accepted to the American Chemical Society's journal Langmuir. Their work discusses the assembly of ferriprotoporphyrin on different materials. The potential application of this research may impact nanotechnology and the construction of chemical sensors to be used in the human body.

    Dr. Christopher Stanley
    (?)

    Stanley
    Professor, Theology
    (?)

Dr. Christopher Stanley presented an invited seminar paper at the Annual Meeting of the Society for New Testament Studies (SNTS) which took place from August 7-11 in Athens, Greece. The paper, titled "Paul the Cosmopolitan?" explored various historic and contemporary understandings of "cosmopolitanism" and argued against the application of this label to the apostle Paul. The paper was discussed for an hour and a half by a group of leading New Testament scholars. Stanley's paper titled "Paul and Asklepios: The Greco-Roman Quest for Healing and the Mission of Paul," which Stanley presented at last year's meeting in Pretoria, South Africa, was accepted for publication by the Journal for the Study of the New Testament. The paper will appear in print in 2019.

    Walsh
Professor of English, School of Arts & Sciences
    (?)

Dr. Megan Walsh gave a talk titled "George Washington in the Library" at a conference held at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuttel, Germany. The Herzog August Bibliothek houses one of the most significant collections of European manuscripts and print materials from the 15th through 18th centuries. This talk is part of Walsh's new book project on America's historic libraries, public engagement, and theories of collection. Walsh participated in the American Council on Education Leadership Academy for Department Chairs in Alexandria, Virginia, in July. Her trip was made possible in part by a generous grant from the Keenan Martine Fund.

    Dr. Christine Uhl
    (?)

    Assistant Professor of Mathematics
    (?)

Dr. Christine Uhl co-authored an article in Algebras and Representation Theory. The paper, titled "Truncated Quantum Drinfeld Hecke Algebras and Hochschild Cohomology," considers a class of algebras that arise as deformations of quantum exterior algebras extended by finite groups. It shows the connection between Hochschild cohomology and truncated quantum Drinfeld Hecke algebras, and provides conditions for which these algebras occur.

    Dr. Xiao-Ning Zhang
    (?)

    Zhang
    Biochemistry Program, Biology
    (?)

On August 6, Zhang presented a workshop titled "Teaching DNA in Our Life from K through 12" at the fifth annual WNY STEAM Conference held at Daemen College. Different hands-on activities were discussed to introduce the concept of DNA to K-12 classrooms. Zhang and senior bioinformatics major Samuel Chen presented their latest research findings as a poster titled "Transcriptome and Proteome Changes in Response to Perturbation of Pre-mRNA Splicing During Reproduction in Arabidopsis" at Gordon Research Conference in Plant Molecular Biology: Dynamic Plant System. The meeting was held from June 10-15 in Holderness, N.H. The meeting was focused on the plant as a dynamic system that responds to stimuli over many different timescales. An emphasis was placed on innovative experimental and computational approaches that facilitate these studies. Participants include scientists from different countries. Zhang received a PUI award to attend this meeting.
