FREE FACULTY & STAFF PHOTO SHOOT SCHEDULED FOR SEPT. 7 & 8

Photographer Craig Melvin, the official photographer for the Buffalo Bills and an SBU adjunct for J/MC this semester, will be on campus Sept. 7 and 8 for a free photo shoot for faculty and staff. The head-and-shoulders photos will be used by the Communications Office for web and print applications. This is a great opportunity for new University employees to have a high-quality photo taken by an exceptional photographer.

The photo shoot will be held in the Reilly Center’s Athletics Hall of Fame on:

• Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Thursday, Sept. 8, from noon to 4 p.m.

There is no fee and no appointment is necessary. There may be a small wait, but each session will take only minutes.

The photo shoot is open to all University employees, not just new hires. If it’s time to update your old photo, this is your chance.

BREAKFAST CONVERSATION REGARDING STUDENT SUCCESS AND RETENTION

The Student Success and Retention Committee will offer a series of professional development breakfast conversations this year focusing on issues related to student success and engagement at St. Bonaventure University. The first conversation -- scheduled for Thursday, September 22, at 8 a.m. in the Doyle Dining Room -- will focus on academic advising and is designed to help academic advisers explore some new ways to interact effectively with their advisees. The workshop will end in time for faculty to meet
10 a.m. classes. The committee has asked several undergraduate academic advisers to speak, highlighting their roles as academic mentors, techniques used to engage a reluctant advisee, etc. There will be a brief update of advising-related information sources and a representative from financial aid will also provide a brief update on new financial aid regulations.

Future breakfast programs will focus on integration of transfer students into the fabric of the University, academic policies and procedures that advisers need to know and understanding the academic experiences of our students before they arrive here.

If you plan to attend the breakfast on 9/22 please RSVP to Barb O'Keefe (bokeefe@sbu.edu) no later than 9/15.

Mike Fischer
Provost and VP for Academic Affairs

Accounts payable disbursements for employees (e.g. travel advances and reimbursement) and outside vendors must be received in the Business Office by 5 p.m. Tuesday in order to be paid the same week. Please provide supporting documents with disbursement request with the proper budget officer authorization/signatures and an extra copy of the invoice if the vendor needs a copy with payment. 2.5 HOUR WEEKLY CARDIO CHALLENGE

The Richter Center is rolling out a new physical challenge this semester, the 2.5 Hour Weekly Cardio Challenge. We are challenging you to do 2.5 hours of cardio exercise a week for 10 weeks. When you break that down, it’s really only a half hour a day, 5 days a week. This is something that everyone can do--Run, Bike, Walk, Basketball, Racquetball, Group Exercise…any cardio exercise!

The challenge begins on Monday, September 12 and will end on Sunday, November 20. The end of each week will be 11:59 p.m. on Sundays and the start of each week following the first week will be 12 a.m. on Mondays.

Please fill out the this registration form and send it to the Richter Center. We will then send you more instructions on how to create an account and track your progress.

For this challenge, you will have to enter the time of your cardio workouts on www.virtualtrainer.lifefitness.com to be entered into the raffle for weekly prizes. Weekly drawings will take place on Mondays at 12 p.m. for the previous week’s participants. Grand prize drawings for a 32’’ HDTV and an iPod Touch will be raffled off on Monday, November 21. For every week you complete 2.5 hours a ticket will be put in the raffle with your name on it. So, if you complete 2.5 hours every week, you’ll have 10 chances to win the TV or iPod.

Grab your friends, co-workers, classmates or professors and challenge them each week.

BONAFIT WALKING WORKS CHALLENGE

Join us for the next 10 weeks in this semester's BonaFit WalkingWorks Challenge - a walking competition between Monday, September 12, and Sunday, November 20. The winning team with the highest average miles will receive a luncheon at the conclusion of the challenge. There will also be a weekly raffle for participants who log their miles online weekly at www.walkingworks.com and an award for the largest team.

Walking Works is set up to be an individual challenge on your part, but also a friendly competition for the campus community. The approach this semester is to have employees in different buildings square off against each other. Employees will join the team of the building they work in. Students, if you would like to participate, join the team of the building you live in (commuter students please use the Richter Center as your building).

To register, go to www.walkingworks.com and click on the "Sign up" link. Please note that the site recommends using Internet Explorer as your browser.

For those new to the program, a drop-down menu will appear with a list of groups. Under "please select your plan," choose "New York, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Western," followed by "St. Bonaventure University" in the next drop-down menu, then "BonaFit WalkingWorks Building Challenge" in the next drop-down menu, and in the final menu, pick the building you work in.

Continuing on the same screen, fill out the registration form by typing you name, e-mail address, password, age group, participation level and work zip code. Click "Submit."

If you already created a profile last year, you will have to make a few changes to your account. Log in to your account using the same e-mail and password that you used last semester. Once you get to the main page, click on "Edit Profile" at the top of the page on the right-hand side. Find the line for program and select "BonaFit WalkingWorks Building Challenge." From there, click on the building you work in. Finally click "Update Profile."

When you sign up for WalkingWorks, you'll receive a Participant Guide with instructions for tracking how long you walk each week. Once you sign up, you'll receive weekly e-mail reminders and tips, and you'll be able to track your personal and team progress on the website.

Do this challenge in conjunction with the Richter Center's NEW 2.5 Hour Weekly Challenge for a chance to win even more prizes!

For more information, contact Carrie Fidurko at wellness@sbu.edu or at ext. 2294.

‘CHILD SOLDIERS’ TO KICK OFF ALL BONAVENTURE VIEWS FESTIVAL

Three movies whose themes complement the 2011-12 All Bonaventure Reads book (“Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal”) have been selected for the upcoming All Bonaventure Views film festival.

The campus community is invited to the following viewings in the Rigas Theater:

6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 — “Returned: Child Soldiers of Nepal’s Maoist Army” tells the personal story of Nepali boys and girls as they attempt to rebuild their lives after fighting a Maoist revolution. Through the voices of former child soldiers, the film examines why these children joined the Maoists and explores the prevention of future recruitment.

4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 — “Everest: Beyond the Limit” was a Discovery Channel mini-series. With unusually severe weather and heartbreaking circumstances, this expedition up the world’s tallest peak becomes fraught with unexpected perils, leading to an emotional journey full of fear, hardship, exhaustion, disappointment and unforgettable triumphs.

4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 — “Call + Response” is a first-of-its-kind feature documentary about present-day human trafficking. Luminaries on the issue, including Cornel West, Madeleine Albright and Daryl Hannah, offer first-hand accounts of this 21st century trade. West draws parallels between the music of the American slaves and the chart-topping hits of today, with performances in the film by such artists as Moby, Switchfoot, Five for Fighting, and Matisyahu.

First-year students who attend the film festival should adhere their Quick Center theater stub to their Passport book.

Highlighting the All Bonaventure Reads fall programming will be a Monday, Sept. 26, campus visit by “Little Princes” author Conor Grennan, during which he’ll give a public presentation at 7 p.m. in the Reilly Center Arena.
