Aung San Suu Kyi had been elected leader of Burma in 1989, but a military junta never allowed her to take office. She has been under house arrest for most of the past twenty years, but a few months ago she was released from house arrest. About eight years after Suu Kyi's initial detainment, Myo Thant was obliged to escape to Thailand. Fearing for his life, Thant was eventually allowed to enter the United States as a political refugee. Thant has become a leader in the international community of Burmese refugees seeking nonviolently to place Suu Kyi as the democratically elected leader of the country the junta calls Myanmar but the refugees continue to call Burma. Lunch is $3.00 (pay upstairs). The Friday Forum is generously subsidized by the President’s Office.
