EMPLOYEE OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR DENTAL, VISION, AND FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS

Please note that open enrollment began Nov. 30, 2011. If you want to stay in the dental and/or vision plan you’re in now, you will not need to do anything to remain enrolled in those plans.

There are no benefit changes to the Guardian Dental Plan. 2012 rate changes are as follows:

High plan single coverage is $34.75 monthly (up from $29.20); family coverage is $98.47 (up from $82.75)
Low plan single coverage is $27.41 monthly (up from $23.03); family coverage is $74.28 (up from $62.42)

Employee options for the dental plan are to join, opt out, or change from the low to high plan (or vice versa).

There are no rate or benefit changes to the EyeMed vision plan; options are to opt out, enroll or do nothing (doing nothing will keep you with the same benefits you currently have). In order to align with the Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance plan year, which runs fiscally June to May, effective Jan. 1, 2012, the flexible spending account will change to a 5 (five) month plan year ending May 31, 2012. The maximum dollar amount you may deposit into your health care FSA may not exceed $2,083 (5/12 of $5,000).

In order to obtain reimbursement from P&A in this short plan year, the eligible out-of-pocket medical, dental or vision expense must be incurred between Jan. 1, 2012 and May 31, 2012. One may not enroll in a flexible spending account if currently enrolled in the high-deductible (6205) health insurance plan. Those who are enrolled in the high-deductible health plan will receive information about their health savings account under separate cover.

If you would like to enroll in the flexible spending account, the Guardian dental plan or the EyeMed vision plan, it will be necessary to do so online. Please visit my.sbu.edu to enroll into or opt out of the dental and/or vision plans or to enroll into the five month flexible spending account. To do so, go to “Employee” then under the “Benefit Enrollment” heading, click on “Online Benefit Enrollment.”

Our open enrollment period will begin Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 and the last date to make any changes for this enrollment period is Friday, Dec. 9, 2011. Remember, if you want to stay in the dental and/or vision plan you’re in now, and if you do not want to enroll in the five month flexible spending account, you will not need to do anything. You remain in your previously elected health insurance plan until next open enrollment period, May 31, 2012. You will have an opportunity to enroll in a flexible spending account for June 1, 2012, through May 31, 2013, during the next open enrollment period.

Benefit summaries for all plans are included on the enrollment website. If you have any questions, please contact Jackie Zimmer at jzimmer@sbu.edu or x2115, or call Francine Schaefer at x2102.

FRIDAY FORUM DEC. 2

Where: The University Club

When: 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Lunch: $3.00. Serve yourself in the Hickey. Pay Upstairs.

Speaker: Richard Lee

Title: Protest Music As Alternative Media during the Vietnam War Era

Protest music played a critical role in strengthening public opposition to America’s involvement in Vietnam by asking questions and raising issues that were absent from the mainstream media. I’ll provide examples to show that protest music filled a gap by providing the American public with information about the war that was not being reported on a regular basis by mainstream media. I also will explain how, in a pre-Internet era, protest songs spread rapidly throughout the nation without heavy airplay on commercial radio, exposure on popular television programs and/or support from major record labels.

The Friday Forum is generously subsidized by the President’s office.

There are open dates available next semester. Interested presenters please contact the Kommissar at gboothew@sbu.edu or x2147.
