POLS 351. Politics of Social Policy

Social policy is one of the most contentious and misunderstood topics in American politics today. The welfare state as such has come under attack, as have those who depend upon its programs. This course addresses many of the contemporary scholarly and policy debates concerning the nature of the welfare state, the development of the American welfare state, the nature of poverty today and the impact of social policy upon divisions in American society. Traditionally, social policy has focused upon poverty, but this course is also interested in its impact upon issues of race, social class and gender.
