 On the night the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament field was announced, Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., president of the University, made an exciting announcement of her own — a campaign to raise $300,000 for the construction of a new locker room and meeting room space for the women’s basketball team. On the heels of the Bonnies’ record-breaking 2011-12 season, the time is right to back the Bonnies and help create a facility that the women of this program deserve.
The 2011-12 season was as memorable as any in St. Bonaventure’s rich basketball tradition. The Bonnies went 31-4 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. They also won the Atlantic 10 regular season title with a perfect 14-0 mark. While such success may not come every season, the Bonnies now have won 20 or more games each of the past four seasons. Winning has become the standard for them and for head coach Jim Crowley, who was named the 2011-12 National Coach of the Year by ESPN.com as well as the A-10 Coach of the Year.
This success, however, is not sustainable without improvements. We are poised to address this need. The new women’s basketball locker room will include numerous amenities the current space does not have. These are critical to helping attract the high caliber student-athletes we want to represent St. Bonaventure. Plans call for three distinct spaces within the locker room: a meeting room with state-of-the-art video equipment; suitable bath and changing areas; and the locker room itself, which will include 15 spacious, personalized lockers and other amenities designed to maximize the time spent there. This new locker room will be on par with or exceed the facilities of our competition in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
“There is no question that our current locker room is outdated and undersized when you compare us to our Division I peers, let alone the Atlantic 10 Conference. We have overcome this in recruiting to this point, but it’s time to address this issue. That’s why I am so excited about this initiative and so grateful to have the support of Sr. Margaret and the Board of Trustees. The new locker room and meeting room will give the student-athletes who represent us so well on and off the court a space that they can be proud of and that they deserve.
As our program has grown and been successful, we’ve seen an increase in attendance and in financial support. I am confident that many former players, alumni, parents, and friends will step forward to make certain that this project becomes a reality. It’s really exciting to think about moving into a new locker room when we start practice a year from now.”
