St. Bonaventure University’s enrollment of new students has jumped 23 percent compared to summer/fall 2015.
Fall freshman enrollment increased by 11 percent from a year ago while new graduate student enrollment experienced a 66 percent increase, said Bernie Valento, vice president for enrollment.
In total, 738 new freshmen, transfer and graduate students joined the St. Bonaventure community this summer and fall — 138 more than a year ago. Overall enrollment at the university, including all undergraduate and graduate students, is up 2 percent with a total student headcount of 2,052 students, Valento said.
The increased freshman enrollment can be attributed to many factors, including enhanced marketing and recruitment efforts as well as several new strategic enrollment initiatives, Valento said.
“The addition of a new cybersecurity major, roster enhancements to both intercollegiate and club sports, and a strong year in our STEM and Franciscan Health Care Professions programs really helped our freshman class,” Valento said.
Graduate student enrollment was bolstered by the addition of a fully online MBA program and increased marketing for the online integrated marketing communications program.
“Thanks to the St. Bonaventure brand, we are attracting students from as far away as California, where five new students enrolled this fall in our online MBA,” Valento said. Forty percent of the online enrollment came from outside New York state.
The university is launching more strategic initiatives this year aimed at boosting enrollment, including an allied health initiative and a military-aligned recruitment plan to attract veterans and their dependents.
The allied health initiative includes the exploration of a new undergraduate program and graduate clinical degree programs in allied health fields.
“It’s an exciting time at Bonaventure as we continue to develop programs and opportunities that meet the needs of today’s students,” Valento said.
