Former U.S. ambassador to Morocco to talk about Middle East April 7 at #Bonas

Mar 31, 2016 |

Edward GabrielOlean native Edward M. Gabriel, former ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, will discuss the instability in the Middle East and the role the United States might play there on Thursday, April 7, at St. Bonaventure University.

Free and open to the public, the talk is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Walsh Science Center Auditorium.

“This is a complicated time in the Middle East, fraught with profound issues and hard choices,” said Dea Hart, who teaches Arabic in SBU’s Department of Modern Languages. “Ambassador Gabriel has a great deal of experience in the region and his presentation will provide insights on the current perils and opportunities as the nations of the world grapple with the unfolding disaster.”

Gabriel has extensive background in international affairs, having convened multilateral policy forums involving national security, environmental, trade and energy issues. He has been involved in matters of Russian and European nuclear non-proliferation and safety and has been active in advising the United States government on Mideast policy matters.

Gabriel is president and CEO of The Gabriel Company, which advises American corporations and governments in the Middle East and North Africa on international business projects and policy matters.

He is also chairman of the Moroccan American Center for Policy and the Moroccan American Cultural Center, two Washington, D.C.-based nonprofits that work to strengthen political, business, cultural and security relationships between Morocco and the U.S.

Gabriel served as the U.S. ambassador to Morocco from November 1997 to March 2001. Prior to his government service, he was president and CEO of the Madison Public Affairs Group Inc., one of the top 10 public affairs firms in Washington, D.C.

Gabriel has written numerous publications in the fields of energy and Middle East and North African policy, and has been a guest lecturer at Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, St. Lawrence, Yale, Stanford, St. Bonaventure, and Gannon, among others.

Gabriel is president and CEO of the American Task Force for Lebanon, co-chair of the American School of Tangier, and a member of the boards of AMIDEAST, the Arab American National Museum, and The Keystone Center.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Gannon University.
