The First-Year Experience Program (FYE) will host its 5th annual All Bonaventure Reads (ABR) Poster Conference from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the Doyle Dining and Trustees Rooms.
All 23 sections of University 101 will display and present their projects to the Bonaventure community. Each section is allowed to present more than one project. Each project must incorporate themes from this year’s ABR book selection, “The Promise of a Pencil,” by Adam Braun.
Director of FYE Chris Brown said, “We started the conference as a way to encourage all the students to represent a culmination with their interaction with the ABR book. University 101 classes have a chance to show the types of themes and topics in the investigation they’ve done with the book.”
According to Brown, one of the secondary goals of the conference is to expose students to a type of academic presentation that may be required in later academic studies or their professional careers.
Each University 101 instructor will act as a judge and vote for one project. The class with the most votes wins a pizza party.
Graduate student Maddie Gionet taught the winning class of last year’s poster conference. Her class created a video presentation based off of ABC’s “What Would You Do?”
“The purpose of the poster contest would be for an opportunity for all the University 101 classes and sections to come together not only as a community, but also to come together to share their thoughts and ideas and opinions about the ABR book that was chosen for them,” Gionet said.
“I think that it’s one thing for the students to read the books we assign them, but it’s another thing for the students to read the book and then take away something and do something with it.”
FYE invites the whole Bonaventure community to attend the event.
“While it is sort of the freshman students presenting their work, I think it’s important for other students to be involved in this,” Gionet said. “I hope the rest of the community feels welcome to come and support the new class of Bonnies coming in.”
