  • learn about the effective design of cover letters and résumés
  • assemble a professional portfolio

Class Meetings

This course is an independent studey, so we have no regular class meetings. We may, however, meet to hear guest speakers who will address topics tailored specifically for you. Attendance is recommended but not required.

The class also will meet for workshops related to the course assignments. These meetings will be held before each project's due date and will last no longer than 45 minutes. Attendance is optional. These workshops are based on student questions over the years, so you'll find them helpful. All workshops will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 in the Murphy auditorium (see dates later in syllabus.)

I'll use university e-mail for all correspondence related to this course.

Course requirements

  • Completion of an error-free cover letter for an internship or job application. I will reject the letter unless you provide me with a copy of the ad for the job or internship. Please submit the letter as a Word document.
  • Completion of an error-free résumé to submit with your job application cover letter. Please submit the resume as a Word document.
  • Completion of a portfolio review with the instructor.
  • Meetings with the instructor to discuss required revisions to letters, résumés and portfolios. Your first drafts of you letters and resumes are unlikely to meet professtional standards. I will email you to set up meetings.
  • Completion of at least 400 approved, documented internship hours.

Where to get help

The university's Career and Professional Readiness Center is a valuable source for help on these projects, but you should make appointments with the CPRC staff well in advance of the project deadlines.

The CPRC recommends you to use the following site for course-related assignments: http://www.sbu.edu/academic_resources.aspx?id=38413.

Project deadlines and workshop dates

Letter: Monday, Oct. 1; workshopThursday, Sept 27

Résumé: Monday, Oct. 22; workshop Thursday, Oct 18.

Portfolio: Monday, Nov 12; workshop Thursday, Nov 8. This will give you time over the midterm break to collect any portfolio material you have at home and to use in your portfolio. I urge you to think of this project in terms of an e-portfolio instead of a dead-tree version.

Grading

The course is graded pass-fail. Students must complete each course requirement to pass. Students who do not will receive a grade of IP (InProgress), which will remain in force until the course requirements are met. You cannot receive your diploma with an IP grade on your transcript.

Seniors: Please take note!

Seniors who will not have their internships hours completed by the end of their academic year of graduation are required to meet with Dean Hoffmann to discuss how and when they expect to complete their internship hours. This meeting should be held as soon as possible.

Special note on academic credit

Activities (including internship hours) that result in academic credit for a course other than JMC 498 (Internship) cannot be applied toward JMC 498.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities who need accommodations in this course are encouraged to contact the Disability Support Services Office, Doyle Room 26, at 375-2066, as soon as possible. Documentation from this office is required before accommodations can be made.

Academic  Honesty Policy

A list of unacceptable practices, penalties to be assigned, and procedures to be followed in prosecuting cases of alleged academic dishonesty may be found in the current Student Handbook. If a student is found guilty of academic dishonesty after the university’s procedures are followed, the instructor reserves the right to impose additional penalties up to and including a final course grade of F, depending on the instructor’s assessment of the severity of the infraction.
