MSED Childhood Literacy at SBU
The MSED Childhood Literacy at St. Bonaventure is a comprehensive master’s degree in the training of literacy teachers for New York state (birth-Grade 6).
The program is designed around a theory-to-practice model where students begin with a graduate core in technology and research, move to theories and foundations of literacy, to methods, and finally to the clinical practicum where students get to use all of the skills they have learned with elementary school learners in the St. Bonaventure Reading Center.
The strength of the program is that it flows in a logical order from beginning to end and is not just a disconnected series of courses that end in a degree.
Insightful professors expect the best, give you knowledge you can use...

"As a special education teacher, dealing with students with reading or learning difficulties, I used several strategies I learned in the Childhood Literacy program. Now I teach first grade, a big year for learning how to read, and my courses continue to serve me.
"The courses gave me a lot of valuable information. I really enjoyed the 'practicum' tutoring course in which we worked one-on-one with students to help them learn to read. I got a real feel for applying what we learned in class to the students in the classroom.
"My professors were not only knowledgeable and insightful, but could relate the curriculum to their own experiences. One in particular, Dr. Paul Schafer, stands out. He taught us how to be creative in presenting children's literature to students, and made us think about how we could get students to want to read and enjoy what they're reading.
"The Childhood Literacy program taught me to think outside the box. It made me realize that every student comes from a different background, and to have more compassion in what and how I teach. The Literacy program expects each student to be the best educator he or she can be."
