Peggy_BurkeA Note of Welcome from  Dr. Peggy Yehl Burke, Dean

Welcome to the St. Bonaventure School of Education web site! St. Bonaventure has been involved in the preparation of educators since 1916. As a small, liberal arts university we are particularly proud to have achieved accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in 2004. This accreditation offers maximum certification portability to our graduates.

We have committed ourselves to preparing future education professionals in as authentic an environment as possible. We offer Professional Development School (PDS) programs in all initial teacher certification and have built all of our programs around meaningful practicum experiences in our many partner schools in New York and Pennsylvania.

We believe you learn to be an effective education professional through extensive, supervised and structured experiences in the real world. We apply this same believe to our advanced master’s degree programs for teachers and to the preparation of school and community mental health counselors and school administrators.

We have high standards for admission to and retention in our programs, and graduates who are extremely competitive candidates after leaving St. Bonaventure. We have built our curricula around a conceptual framework that ties all coursework to a central core of competencies. We provide value-added, ethically based programs that provide our degree candidates with competence in the form of knowledge in their field, experience in authentic environments of schools and agencies, and a commitment to social justice consistent with our Franciscan tradition.
