Founded in 1975, the St. Bonaventure rugby program has a long history of success in New York State and beyond. The club won five New York State Rugby Conference Division 2 championships (`93, `98, `04, `07, `08) before advancing to Division 1 in 2009. Now a member of the Division 1AA Empire Rugby Conference, SBU rugby offers a full-time coach employed by the University as well as a staff of assistant coaches with more than 30 years of coaching experience.
As a member of the SBU rugby team, you will develop your personal accountability, mental toughness, and competitive drive. Your experience with the St. Bonaventure rugby team will help you on and off the field during and after your college career. Not only will you have every opportunity to excel in the classroom and on the rugby pitch, our dedicated alumni group will support you through internship and job placement.
High School Rugby Players
St. Bonaventure rugby will support you in your quest to develop into a high quality rugby player and man. By emphasizing skill development, physical fitness and game knowledge, you will gain the tools to compete at the highest level of American rugby.
Over the past several years, experienced players from high school teams across New York [pdf], the Northeast, Midwest [pdf] and Mid-Atlantic [pdf] regions have helped St. Bonaventure rugby become a premier Division 1AA team. No Experience? No Problem...
While more and more players are entering the collegiate ranks with rugby experience, several top players throughout the team's history and today have stepped on campus without any previous experience. Football, basketball, hockey and soccer players, wrestlers and track athletes can all find skills that easily transition to the rugby pitch. Our full-time, dedicated coaching staff is committed to ensuring your transition to rugby is as smooth as possible. With the proper amount of dedication and hard work, you can quickly develop into a qualified player.
