Parent's Page

Message From The Director of the

St. Bonaventure University Counseling Center

Welcome to the St. Bonaventure University Counseling Center Parent's Page. The Parent's Page is designed to provide valuable information to Parents and Significant Adults in St. Bonventure University's student's lives. Hopefully, the information on the Parent's Page will provide insight into better understanding the developmental process that a St. Bonaventure University student goes through during his or her time at St. Bonaventure University.

If you have questions, comments, or would like to share helpful information, please email the SBU Counseling Center at ccsbu@sbu.edu or call the Center at 716-375-2310.

Tips for Parents

  • Write!!! Even if they don't...Send Care Packages!
  • Don't ask if they're homesick...they will probably say, "YES!"
  • Expect Change...
  • Do not tell your student that these are," the best years of your life"- you are setting them up to think that they are doing something wrong if they are not living up to your expectations.
  • Ask questions that you WANT answers to, and try not to overreact.
  • Do not immediately become alarmed by stressed out phone calls or e-mails.
  • Encourage your student to stay at school on weekends.
  • VISIT- but not TOO often!
  • Don't jump to fix your student's problems. Instead, point them in the direction of valuable resources on campus.
  • Set boundaries and expectations for your student both at school and at home.
  • Talk to your student about credit cards and managing money.
  • Talk to your students about drugs and alcohol! (Helpful link:www.edc.org/hec/pubs/parents.html )
  • Be aware of the signs of depression. Feel free to contact the SBU Counseling Center for signs and symptoms.
  • Be aware of campus resources- Counseling Center, Director of Residence Life, Teaching & Learning Center, Health Services, Career Services, 1st year Student Office, etc. Refer your student if necessary.
  • Questions or Concerns? Contact the SBU Counseling Center at 716-375-2310 or feel free to email at ccsbu@sbu.edu.
