Professor named to editorial board for Journal of Behavioral Addictions
Kimberly Young, Psy.D., professor of management at St. Bonaventure and director of the graduate Strategic Leadership program, was named to the editorial board for the Journal of Behavioral Addictions, a new international scientific journal that aims to offer a direct forum for research in connection with behavioral or non-substance addictions.
Young was one of the plenary speakers for the first International Conference on Behavioral Addictions, held March 11-12 in Budapest, Hungary. The journal hosted the conference as part of its new launch.

Dean Balthazard co-authors paper accepted for publication
Dr. Pierre Balthazard, professor of management and dean of the School of Business at St. Bonaventure University, has co-authored a paper that has been accepted as the feature article in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology.
Other co-authors of the paper, titled “The Psychological and Neurological Bases of Leaders Self-Complexity and Effects on Adaptive Decision-Making," include Dr. Sean Hannah of Wake Forest University, Dr. David Waldman of Arizona State University, Maj. Peter Jennings of the U.S. Army, and Dr. Robert Thatcher of the University of South Florida.
The study examined 103 military leaders, including 29 captains and majors that had recently returned from combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Connie Whitton, '73, named to Cazenovia College Board of Trustees
Connie Monteleone Whitton of Syracuse, a 1973 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, has joined the Cazenovia College Board of Trustees. She will serve on the board's Institutional Advancement and Student Life committees.
Whitton is an executive coach and business consultant. She has served on the boards of the Franciscan Academy, Rape Crisis Center, and New York State Bankers Retail Banking Committee. She is a recipient of the Syracuse Post Standard's Women of Achievement Award, and was awarded an honorary associate in arts degree from Onondaga Community College in 2009
Whitton earned a bachelor's degree in management from St. Bonaventure University and has completed extensive graduate work at Syracuse University's School of Management.

Three from School of Business present at Academy of Business Disciplines meeting
Amy Miller, MBA marketing graduate assistant, Dr. Mike Russell, professor of marketing, and Dr. Carol Wittmeyer, associate professor of management, presented at the Academy of Business Disciplines Annual Meeting in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida.
The group earned best in session for their family business case presentation and paper on "Southern Tier Brewing Company: Managing Growth in the Craft Beer Market."
Additionally, Russell moderated, Miller supported and Wittmeyer presented on the panel "Family Business Academic and Outreach Initiatives," along with colleagues Andrew Keyt of Loyola University, Chicago, and Kent Lutz of the University of Cincinnati.

Young discusses cyber addiction on international show GO HEALTHY
Dr. Kimberly Young, professor of management, appeared on the GO HEALTHY show carried on DIRECTV and broadcast live globally by satellite on the Hope Channel International in Australia, New Zealand, India, and Africa. The show promotes a healthy lifestyle and a better quality of life. On Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, the show focused on cyber addiction. Young was the guest speaker for the hour and discussed various medical and health issues related to overuse of digital technology.
Young was also quoted in Mobile Enterprise's feature story “Are you addicted to the Internet" in last month’s issue. The article focused on mobile workers and corporate strategies to detect signs of Internet addiction and how IT managers can best respond. Mobile Enterprise is a monthly publication that reaches 30,000 senior IT managers and professionals dealing with mobile solutions for businesses.

Students visit nearby headquarters of Zippo Manufacturing
Students in a product management class taught by Dr. Michael Russell, professor of marketing, toured the headquarters of Zippo Manufacturing Company in nearby Bradford, Pa.
Chris Funk, Zippo's outdoor product marketing manager, described the process used in developing new products, particularly the outdoor line of products that Zippo is unveiling during the next year.
Students were also able to visit a Zippo Concept Store.
“The opportunity for students to see a local company using the best practices in product development enriches their education and helps prepare them for careers in business,” Russell said.

Entrepreneurs discuss business with St. Bonaventure students
Olean entrepreneurs Frank Jester, who owns Jester’s Hot Rod Garage, and his son Adam, who owns a computer networking business, spoke to Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) students in Murphy Professional Building on campus, then went out to a parking lot behind Plassmann Hall to see part of Frank’s business -- about 10 classic hot rods.
The Entrepreneurship Club, a subdivision of SIFE, sponsored the event. Matt O’Connell, co-president of the Entrepreneurship Club, said the presentation helped students realize that business dreams do come true through hard work, passion and dedication. Read more.

Young interviewed for article about online gaming addiction in China, U.S.
Dr. Kimberly Young, professor of management, was interviewed in September 2012 for the China Popular Computer Weekly (CPCW) about an article on online gaming addiction in China and the U.S. Young explained the cultural differences contributing to the development of the disorder in both countries and why the U.S. has lagged behind in terms of treatment. Launched by the Popular Computer Group in 1992, China Popular Computer Weekly (CPCW) is now China's top selling IT publication being the highest circulating IT publication for the last 16 consecutive years.

Wittmeyer elected chair of Family Business Special Interest Group

Dr. Carol B. Wittmeyer, associate professor of management, was elected chair of the Family Business Special Interest Group of USASBE (United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship) at the 2012 annual meeting in New Orleans Jan. 12-15. USASBE is the largest independent, professional, academic organization in the world dedicated to advancing the discipline of entrepreneurship.
Wittmeyer served as a co-moderator and presenter for the preconference workshop titled "Strategies for Building Family Business Programs and Courses."

SBU students quiz alumnus on international business
Richard (Dick) P. Kearns, ’72, who retired in 2010 as chief administrative officer at Zurich Financial Services Group, told St. Bonaventure students that their grounding in the Franciscan tradition and the SBU connections they cultivate can be keys to success in the international business community.
Kearns took questions from a panel of students representing various majors in the School of Business. The event was held in the Rigas Theater of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.
Kearns began his career at Price Waterhouse in 1972, was admitted as a partner in 1984. He was appointed leader of global partner affairs following the merger that created PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1998.
He joined Zurich's senior management team in Switzerland in 2002, and continues to serve as a senior advisor for the firm.

Paper by business faculty earns research award
Darwin King, professor of accounting, Dr. Carl Case, professor of management information systems, and Kathleen Premo, lecturer in management, presented a paper titled “An International Mission Statement Comparison: United States, France, Germany, Japan, and China” at the Allied Academies International Conference held in Las Vegas on Oct. 12-14, 2011, in Las Vegas.
The paper earned a Distinguished Research Award, which was awarded to only 18 percent of the papers at the conference. Earning this award insures that the paper will be published in the Academy of Strategic Management Journal (ASMJ).

Young keynotes international conference
Dr. Kimberly S. Young, professor of management, was the keynote speaker at the International Conference on Digital Culture held in Seoul, Korea, on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011. The lecture, given via Skype, focused on new trends in digital media and Internet use.
