While participating in ROTC, Cadets will complete two distinct courses which are the Basic Course and the Advanced Course. The Basic Course is conducted during the first two years of collegiate study, and the Advanced Course is typically taken during the last two years. Together, the two components of Army ROTC are designed to develop leadership skills and prepare Cadets for their careers as Army officers, one of our nation's most respected professions. After completing the program, Cadets may serve full time in the Active Duty Army, or part time in the National Guard or the Army Reserve.
In addition to the courses they are taking, Cadets of the Seneca Battalion will take a Military Science course and lab every semester as electives. .During the Military Science class, Cadets will learn skills and techniques regarding leadership, time management, and the Army Values. During the Military Science lab, Cadets will focus on basic military skills such as drill and ceremony, marksmanship, and battle drills. Cadets do not major in Military Science; rather, they are free to select any major offered by the university.
Traditionally, Cadets will be enrolled in ROTC for four years. These years are numbered MS I, MS II, MS III, and MS IV, corresponding to the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years respectively. The program can, however, be completed in less time and there are several alternate programs that are available. Come talk to us if you have fewer than four years of college left and are interested in becoming an Army Officer.
The Basic Course requirement can be satisfied in a number of ways. The traditional way is to complete the MS I and MS II courses and labs during the freshman and sophomore years. The Basic Course classes are designed to introduce Cadets to ROTC and the Army, as well as to assess and develop individual leadership abilities. Cadets may be enrolled at any time during these two years. Other options for completing the Basic Course are:
Compress the MS I and II years and complete both in one year
Attend the Leader Training Course (LTC)
Attend Basic Training
Complete four years of Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) with PMS approval
Attend one year at the United States Military Academy
In order to complete the Advanced Course, Cadets must complete the MS III and MS IV courses during your last two years of undergraduate study, or as a continuing graduate student. The MS III year focuses on applied leadership, preparing Cadets for the Leader Development and Assessment Course which is attended at Fort Lewis, WA during the summer after the MS III year. The MS IV year focuses on training Cadets in the responsibilities and duties of a commissioned officer. The MS IV year also completes the transition from being an Army Cadet to becoming an Army Officer.
Does it sound easy? It should not. As a Cadet of the Seneca Battalion you will be tested mentally and physically, but when you have finished, you will proudly wear the gold bars of a United States Army Second Lieutenant in the most powerful Army in the world.
