What is ROTC?
ROTC stands for Reserve Officers' Training Corps. It is a program of study leading to a presidential appointment as a second lieutenant in the United States Armed Forces.
What is Military Science?
Military Science is the name of the academic department that provides ROTC instruction at the university. The program includes a specified sequence of leadership, management, and professional knowledge classes as well as "hands on" leadership experience.
What can ROTC do for me?
ROTC can:
Provide academic credit toward graduation.
Provide realistic leadership and management experience while still a college student.
As a sophomore or as a junior you will conduct leadership training.
As a senior you will plan and supervise training.
Enhance your resume.
Personnel managers know this training identifies the best potential job candidates.
Give an opportunity to participate in field trips, marksmanship, confidence and team building, and survival programs.
Provide broader insight into current world situations.
Provide numerous opportunities for generous scholarships.
Are there women in ROTC?
Women make up about one third of all our cadets.
How much money would I make as a cadet?
Contracted cadets earn a tax-free monthly stipend for up to 10 months each year (freshmen $300, sophomores $350, juniors $450, and seniors $500).
What does a scholarship pay for?
The ROTC scholarships at St. Bonaventure University pay full tuition and mandatory fees. This is in addition to the monthly stipend listed above and a $1,200 annual book allowance. In addition, St. Bonaventure University also provides contracted cadets a generous room and board grant. New York State students receiving full tuition ROTC scholarships are not eligible for NYS TAP per NYS regulations. If an additional award such as a PELL grant causes an over award, the over award will be corrected by reducing the SBU Resident Grant by the amount of the over award. The student will continue to receive his/her contracted award through a combination of ROTC, SBU, federal and outside funds.
Do I have to go into the army after college?
Only if you sign a contract do you incur a service obligation as an Army Officer. You can serve either part-time or full-time. All students are welcome to take our courses, regardless of their interest in military service.
What's the difference between "officer" and "enlisted?"
Officers Lead soldiers while planning Army training and operations. Enlisted Lead, follow, and execute orders.
How much time does ROTC take per week for contracted cadets?
3-4 hours per week outside of your military science class and lab.
Do I get college credit for Military Science classes?
Yes. Some classes are graded; others are credit/no credit. They all count for elective credit at the university.
Does military science count as a "minor"?
Not at St. Bonaventure University.
What do you have for active duty soldiers?
Green to Gold, 2, 3, and 4 year scholarships are available.
What privileges do I have as a Cadet?
Leadership training
Summer training schools (airborne, air assault, etc)
Military recreational facilities on base
Use of PX and other on post stores
Military Airlift Travel (Space-A, free travel)
