Dr. Hill gives banquet talk at Mathematical Association’s sectional meeting
Dr. Chris Hill, assistant professor of mathematics at St. Bonaventure University, gave the banquet talk at the spring 2013 Seaway Section Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, held April 19–20 at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
Hill’s talk, titled “The abc Conjecture and Beyond,” kicked off the conference, which was attended by more than 100 faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Dempsey and Koerner Priester receive The Mathematics Award
Jennifer Dempsey received The Mathematics Award and Chloe Koerner Priester received the The Mathematics Award Honorable Mention on Saturday, May 12, at the University's 2012 Honors Ceremony. Jen is a senior dual mathematics and computer science major and Chloe is a senior mathematics major and honors student.
The Mathematics Award is given to the seniors who, upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics, have demonstrated general excellence in mathematics throughout their undergraduate careers. Students explore geometry in SBU's first Zometool Workshop
St. Bonaventure's first Zometool Workshop was held Nov. 9, 2011, at the university's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.
Organized by Dr. Chris Hill, assistant professor of mathematics, and Evelyn Sabina, curator of education at The Quick Center, the two-hour workshop allowed high school students to explore geometry using a construction kit called Zometool.
The workshop culminated with a "geometric barn-raising": the building of a very large structure called a mega-icosahedron. Read more.

SBU hosts regional meeting of the Mathematics Association of America
St. Bonaventure University hosted the Fall 2011 Mathematics Association of America (MAA) Seaway Section Meeting in October 2011. The two-day event featured four plenary presentations, including banquet speaker Jonathan Hoyle, a Macintosh software architect at Eastman Kodak in Rochester.
In 2001, Hoyle was a senior software engineer and mathematician at Gene Codes Forensics and was responsible for implementing the mathematical algorithms used in the forensic software written specifically for the World Trade Center victim identification process, the largest and most complex forensic project in history.
Some 125 mathematics faculty, students and practitioners attended the conference. Read more.

Mathematics major Nicole Markert named Ideal Bonaventure Student
Seniors Nicole Markert and Thomas Waters Jr. were recognized as Ideal Bonaventure Students at the university's Honors Ceremony May 14, 2011, and at Commencement Exercises the next day.
Markert, a native of Auburn, Ohio, was a mathematics major with dual minors in psychology and computer science. She was a member of the women’s varsity soccer team for four years and team captain for three years. She assisted as a math tutor at the Teaching and Learning Center for five semesters and worked as on-site director for Hands On Soccer Campus for children in Cleveland. Read more.
