Why Chemistry at SBU

Chemistry at SBU

What our graduates do...

A Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry can be the starting point for a wide variety of careers. Former graduates have held positions such as Fulbright scholar in the Netherlands, senior research chemist at Eastman Kodak, chief toxicologist at Erie County Medical Center, provost at CUNY, patent attorney, patent examiner in the U.S. Patent Office, EPA lawyer, teacher, doctor, dentist, veterinarian, and optometrist.

From May 1993 to May 2002, there were 33 graduates with a B.S. in chemistry. Of the 32 whose career paths are known,

        14 (42%) went directly to graduate school;
    12 (36%) went to work in the chemical industry;
    3 (9%) went into high school teaching;
    1 each went to veterinary school, optometry school, and the U.S. Army.

For a wealth of information about chemistry, consult the website for the American Chemical Society (ACS). In particular, the Careers section of the ACS site contains valuable resources on careers in chemistry.
