This program of study is directed at
students who are not planning to continue with graduate study at the
Ph.D level. Students interested pursuing careers outside of academia
should consider this program of study.
The General Master's track will
provide the minimum requirements and background for students interested
in teaching at the community college level; however, the
Pre-Professional track is recommended.
For this program of study, the
student is required to complete all of the degree requirements (e.g.
comprehensive exam) for the M.A. in English. This is usually achieved by
successfully completing a total of 30 credit hours of contact course
work (10 classes). In some cases, General Track M.A. students may
petition to pursue a thesis option (6 credit hours).
The Generalist and Academic
Pre-professional M.A. are both designed as four-semester/two-year
programs. Well-qualified SBU undergrads aiming for the M.A. may be able
to shorten their M.A. degree program by taking English graduate courses
while still an undergrad (permission from the graduate program director
and graduate dean's office is required).
For details, contact Dr. Kaplan Harris, Director of the M.A. Graduate Program in English.
