The Corona Project

The Corona Project has been a research project supervised by Steven Andrianoff and David Levine since late 2002.  The goal of the project is to create a framework which supports early introduction of the concepts of software testing – system testing and unit testing – into the computer science curriculum.  Work on the Corona Project has been supported through two IBM Eclipse Innovation Grants awarded to these faculty members.

Students have been involved in the Corona project since its inception.  Steve Gewand ’04 and Greta Heissenberger ’05 coded much of the original framework of the system while working as summer research students on campus.  They focused primarily on the issues of testing a main method and giving variable feedback to the user.  Much of their work was reported in a paper [1] entitled, “A Testing-Based Framework for Programming Contests”, presented at the Eclipse Technology eXchange as part of the OOPSLA conference in October 2003.

During the summer of 2004, Steve was joined by Paul Wager ’06.  Their work involved extending the framework and exploring the issues surrounding teaching testing concepts in the introductory course.  Some of the modules (“Test Me”) that they developed were featured as part of the Nifty Assignments Panel at the 2005 Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education.

More recently, Dan Eisemann '10 has been working on the project since Spring 2007.  Dan has been involved in a complete redesign and expansion of the system.  This past spring it was used with great success to generate all of the testing suites for the department’s annual programming contest.  We are beginning to make use of it in some courses as well.   Dan has recently submitted an abstract describing his work as part of     Dan Eisemann discusses the Corona Project with Dr. Andrianoff at the 2009 Arts & Sciences Expo
the Association for Computing Machinery’s Undergraduate Student Research Competition.  We are waiting to hear about the status of his submission even as other work continues on the project.
