The history of St. Bonaventure is steeped in stories of enormous sacrifice in order to build what is today a university of distinction. Perhaps the most memorable story is that of founder Nicholas Devereux arriving as a young boy in America with little more than the clothes on his back and three gold coins in his pocket. In gratitude for his safe arrival from Ireland, he gave one of those coins to the Catholic Church.
By 1858, it was the wealth of Nicholas and Mary Devereux that laid the foundation for the university. In the more than 150 years since St. Bonaventure opened its doors, countless alumni, parents, and friends have followed the Devereuxes’ lead. They have invested in the students and in the future growth of this exceptional institution.
Today you can play a significant role in the continued success of the university by becoming a member of The 1858 Founders Society. Through your annual gift of $1,858 to The Bonaventure Fund, you will positively impact every student on campus. Like Nicholas and Mary Devereux, you will be a founder of our future.

Each day at St. Bonaventure, we honor the legacy of our founders.
In the 19th century, Nicholas and Mary Devereux made the first financial gifts of land and money to create St. Bonaventure College. Today, I invite you to become a member of The 1858 Founders Society. This leadership designation provides direct support to the foundation of the university’s fundraising program: The Bonaventure Fund.
As a member of The 1858 Founders Society, you will be among a select group of alumni, parents, and friends who fully embrace our mission and vision for the future.
Through your annual gift of $1,858, you will help establish pathways to internships, graduate school, and careers for our students; help equip classrooms with the latest technology; fund scholarships; recruit and retain distinguished faculty; and generate new programs. In short, you will provide resources that help change the lives of St. Bonaventure students — just as our founders once did.
Join me in investing in the university’s future, and in honoring the incredible inheritance received from our founders, by making your gift to The 1858 Founders Society today.
Pax et Bonum … Peace and good,
Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D. University President |
