How do you manage your coursework and still make time to hang out with your friends? Many students think that it is impossible to juggle schoolwork, social life, and sleep schedule without dropping one of them. This is absolutely not true! In order to balance these, you need two key skills: time management and self-control. Time management goes hand-in-hand with planning ahead. If I know that there is a basketball game this coming Saturday that I will want to go to with my friends, I need to make sure that I get extra work done during the week. One of my biggest tips that I’ve learned during my time here at Bonaventure, is that it’s often really hard to feel motivated to do work during the day when you’ve been sitting in class for a while. It’s really tempting to put the work off until the night before it’s due. The thing is, during the day all your friends will have classes at different times and it isn’t until nighttime that everyone wants to hang out. Push yourself to buckle down and finish your work during the day so that you can say YES! when asked to hang out later that night!
This also brings me to my second point; self-control. This is knowing when you have say no to a movie night, to a basketball game or to a birthday party on a Tuesday night. Realizing that your schoolwork ultimately should come first and that there will always be another movie night for you to attend is an important aspect of balancing college life. You have to get over your FOMO (fear of missing out) and realize that there will always be another social event to attend but that assignment that you’re about to skip could be the difference between a passing and failing grade in a class. Ultimately, I’m not going to tell you that you will never have to make a sacrifice, but managing your time wisely will certainly cut down the amount of sacrifices you will have to make, and self-control will help you realize that schoolwork is the reason that you’re attending Bonaventure, and it has to come before binge watching Netflix with friends.

Kate’s 4 Tips for Success in College:
A lot of my success at Bonaventure has been from learning how to balance schoolwork and my social life (read above question!) This is so important because I do well in my classes but I also get to have fun with my friends, which is such a stress relief!
This should be really simple but some students have such a hard time with it! Classes make up probably 3-4 hours of your day at the most; it’s really not that much time to give up! Participation and attendance are a huge part of your grade for many classes, and these are such easy points to attain if you just go to class.
In terms of time management, I use a few techniques to figure out my daily schedule. I always use a planner in which I write down my assignments from class as well as upcoming events. Many professors already have major tests scheduled in the syllabus on the first day of class, so I write these down and can watch them approach for the entire semester. I am also a huge fan of to-do lists. This is a great way to visually see everything you need to accomplish and the best feeling is checking an item off!
