Why should I study abroad?

There are many advantages to including a study abroad program as part of your academic experience at St. Bonaventure University.

As a study abroad student, you will:

What's more, choosing to study abroad does not mean you have to postpone your graduation date. You will receive guidance to ensure that your graduation track is not interrupted.

Additionally, most programs teach in English, so proficiency in a second language is not required. You'll also get help finding a program that fits your budget.

Semester programs abroad

St. Bonaventure University partners with CEA and API Abroad, which are the study abroad industry leaders, to find a semester-based destination and academic program that best serves you.

CEA offers our students semester-based study abroad programs in 15 countries, such as France, Germany, Ireland, and Costa Rica.

API Abroad offers study abroad experiences in more than 22 countries including Australia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, and Scotland, as well as in 50 cities globally.

Students can choose to study abroad during their J-Term (January), by semester, May-Mester, Summer, or through a year-long experience, if they desire. Both offer internship opportunities as well.

Programs are designed to present a holistic learning experience, because your time out of the classroom or workplace matters as much as your time in it.

A summer program gives you the same opportunity to earn academic credit while seeing the world as our semester-based programs.

Six study abroad opportunities, highlighted below, are organized and conducted by faculty and staff at St. Bonaventure University..

OXFORD

A prestigious 6-week study program at world-famous Oxford University, including excursions and time for exploring England and parts of Europe.

OXFORD PROGRAM

CHINA

A unique and intense 2-week journey to mainland China. Visit Beijing and Shanghai while completing a 3-credit China history and culture course.

CHINA STUDIES

SPAIN

A 5-week, 6-credit Spanish immersion experience in Salamanca, Spain, with cultural excursions, sightseeing and special group activities.

SPANISH IMMERSION

ITALY — PERUGIA

A 5-week immersion experience to "the green heart of Italy" with excursions to Rome, Florence, Assisi and other destinations, while earning SBU Gen Ed credits.

ITALY — PERUGIA

SORRENTO, ITALY

A 5-week, 6-credit academic & cultural mobile-learning experience with a focus on digital content creation. A customized internship experience available.

A 12-day, 3-credit study tour with SBU history profs to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto and other cities with a focus on dynamic urban environments and modern culture.

The Spanish Chronicles program offers an unveiling of Spain through castles, fairytales, and the stars, with museum visits, day trips, overnights, and three course options.

How to apply to study abroad

Before applying for a study abroad program, make an appointment with Jonathan Mascaut, associate director of International Student Services and Study Abroad. Email Jonathan Mascaut.

Identify a program that best fits your academic needs and your schedule. Consider the program costs and your budget, and make an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid to explore any aid for which you are eligible.

After finding a program and determining its affordability:

Get a passport
Apply to the program
Complete a transfer request form, available in the Office of the Registrar in the Administration Building. The form requires you to find an equivalent Bonaventure course for each study abroad course you plan to take, and to get each course approved by the appropriate SBU department chair. This is to ensure that you receive SBU credit.
Once accepted into a program, bring a copy of the acceptance letter to the Registrar's Office.
Pay close attention to housing. Housing options and procedures differ, depending on where the student chooses to study.
Get a visa, if travel for the program you select requires one.
Do a final check of all documentation to ensure that everything is completed, all forms are submitted, and courses are approved.
Book your flight.
Schedule a final session with the study abroad office to make sure everything is completed and you are prepared to go.
