Hometown: Bremen, Ind. Major: Marketing
LaurieAnne Wickens, ’17, a native of Bremen, Ind., redefines the term “small-town girl.”
"Olean is a city compared to where I live,” Wickens said with a laugh. “I want to do everything there is to do here because Indiana’s very boring. There’s nowhere to ski or ice skate in Indiana, and that’s just in the winter, so I always like finding stuff to do with my friends. We went to Rock City and we’ve been to Ellicottville and just all over, and soon we’re going to have to expand our horizons to Buffalo.”
Wickens’ ambition doesn’t stop with exploring her new home away from home, however. Her involvement in St. Bonaventure’s Honors Program and in several clubs on campus (ENACTUS, Embrace it Africa, SEARCH, and SBU for Life, to name a few) ensures that she is never idle for long. With so many things to balance within her schedule, however, she was tentative at first about joining SBU’s Honors Program.
“Going in I was kind of on the fence about it,” Wickens said, “but my mom said I should do it, so I did, and I’m glad that I did. I’m getting more out of it than I thought I would and it’s better than I thought it was going to be. I don’t see any reason not to try it if you’ve got the requirements met. There are a lot of positives.”
Those positives, she said, include early class registration, honors housing, and, of course, the honors classes themselves.
One of the most important things the Honors Program has brought Wickens, however, is a strong group of friends that live right down the hall.
“I met all my closest friends on my floor, and they’re all in honors so it’s nice to know that the people you’re living around have the same value for their education. It’s not always quiet, but it’s more focused, and if you need to get stuff done you can go and tell people to quiet down and they will because everyone respects that school comes first,” she said.
