MSED IN COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING

St. Bonaventure’s Community Mental Health Counselor Education program is nationally accredited by CACREP and is located within the NCATE accredited School of Education. Several degrees are available in the growing field of counseling:
  • MSED/MS Counselor Education - Community Mental Health (60 hours)
  • MSED Counselor Education - School Counseling (48 hours)
  • Advanced Certificate of Study - School Counseling

Education & Training

St. Bonaventure University is also a certified education and training provider for the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). The 85 continuing education requirements in addictions is offered through SBU. Note, for the full extent of the additional requirements for this credential, click here.

When you select SBU for your program of study, you are selecting a New York State registered program. Students in the Community Mental Health Track may also pursue a thesis when they select the M.S. degree option. Students who have successfully completed the Community Mental Health Track are eligible to apply for their Mental Health Counselor license. Specific requirements for the Mental Health Counselor license post graduation are specified on the website linked above.

The Counseling Program offers a traditional late afternoon-night format on the Olean Campus, while the Buffalo Center offers a weekend program at the Hilbert campus. Students at the Buffalo Center are required to take one course on the main campus. Note, while some sites offer evening or weekend opportunities, the majority of fieldwork is completed during the weekday. 

The community mental health program is typically a three-year program. However, it is possible to complete the 60 hours in two and a half years. Some of the courses are offered in a hyrbid/online format. 

You are provided with a sound theoretical foundation in counseling, as well as extensive hands-on field experiences, which are further described in the Counselor Education Program Handbook.

This program prepares individuals for careers in mental health counseling (21-1014.00), which offers good  and varied career opportunity, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Counseling Clinic

Teaching Philosophy

A setting, such as SBU, whereby students are valued, professors are highly credentialed and supportive, and the educational environment is one in which mentoring, teamwork and service to others are appreciated and encouraged, is essential. This type of teaching environment gives students an opportunity to learn and grow, and enhances faculty professional development.

I firmly believe in an Active Learning Approach (Bonwell & Eison, 1991), teaching didactic material and developing course activities and requirements which foster critical thinking, creativity, digestion and application of the didactic material. I believe this to be true in general, and especially for a counselor in training, whose most important tool is him/herself.

Learning in my mind is an interactive process. At this level of study, I also feel that it important and beneficial for graduate students to have exposure to professional role models. I include colleague and community professional class presentations to foster this exposure. We teach what we best need to learn ("Jonathan Livingston Seagull").

Current Research Interests/Projects My research across the decades has involved a theme of issues related to youth and their families: disability, grief, school counseling, special education and cyberbullying.
