ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The School of Business at St. Bonaventure University will host Careers in Sports Day, an interactive workshop, on Thursday, April 19, for high school sophomores and juniors.

Centered on the concepts of team building, event planning, and marketing, the first Careers in Sports Day will conclude with a KanJam tournament involving the high school students and St. Bonaventure varsity athletes.

“Not everyone can be a professional athlete, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pursue a successful and rewarding career in the field of sports,” said Dr. John J. Watson, professor of marketing in the School of Business.

A former professional basketball player in Ireland and England and team owner in New Zealand, Watson said, “We are proud of our students in the School of Business, and look forward to them interacting and advising our high school guests.”

Beginning at 9 a.m., students will be organized into groups and partnered with students from the St. Bonaventure School of Business. The participants will spend the morning planning and promoting the event on the SBU campus.

How To Play Kan JamThe highlight of the day comes in the afternoon with the KanJam Pro-Am where the students will be partnered with Division I athletes, the “pros.” Prizes will be awarded to the groups who organize the most creative publicity campaign, and those who make the most significant impact to the execution of a successful tournament.

“The nationally accredited St. Bonaventure School of Business prepares students in numerous ways, including sports management,” said Watson. “This experience will give them a great opportunity to explore business as a potential area of study at the college level, while also exposing them to some principles of sports management and promotion.”
