Thirteen students from China to take part in #Bonas STEM Camp

Jul 15, 2016 |

Students prepare to depart Beijing for the U.S.
More than two dozen high school students — half of them from China — will participate in an international STEM Camp next week at St. Bonaventure University.

Thirteen students (pictured) from China will arrive on campus Sunday. Their weeklong stay at SBU is part of a more extensive educational and recreational trip to the United States.

In total, 26 students — one from Spain and the other 12 from the U.S. — will take part in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics camp.

“This is not only a wonderful academic opportunity for these students, but also a great chance for them to learn about other cultures as they work and socialize together during the week,” said Dr. Xiaoning Zhang, associate professor of biology and organizer of the international STEM Camp.

During the week, students will be working with St. Bonaventure professors and learn how to make scientific discoveries; how to apply math and science knowledge to real-life situations, including a crime scene investigation; and how infectious diseases spread, including “superbugs.”

Students will also participate in an aerospace mission at the Dresser-Rand Challenger Learning Center, and take part in sessions that focus on public speaking, study skills for college, teamwork, leadership and the college application process, Zhang said.

Campers at night will watch the film “Apollo 13,” participate in cultural exchanges, and put on a talent show on Friday, July 22, the final night of the camp.
