Dr. Gregory Privitera, associate professor of psychology at St. Bonaventure, will give a free public presentation on Monday, Aug. 18, titled “Depression and Obesity: Are They Connected?” The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Gallery Room of the Olean Public Library and will include time for discussion with the audience. The library is located at 134 N. 2nd Street in Olean.
Privitera is an expert on psychological issues pertaining to food and eating. His talk will examine what psychologists have learned in recent years about the relation between depression, weight loss, and weight gain. The program should be helpful to anyone who has struggled personally or has friends or family members who have struggled with issues of depression and eating.
Privitera is an engaging speaker who was honored earlier this year with St. Bonaventure’s Award for Professional Excellence in Teaching. The quality of his research was acknowledged by the university in 2013 when he received the Junior Faculty Award for Professional Excellence, St. Bonaventure’s highest research award for a junior faculty member.
Privitera is the author of four books, three study guides, and nearly two dozen professional articles in his areas of scholarly expertise. His 2014 textbook, "Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences", was named “Most Promising New Textbook” by the national Text and Academic Authors Association. His research is featured regularly in major media publications such as the Wall Street Journal and popular health magazines like Men’s Health.
Privitera’s presentation is sponsored by the Cattaraugus County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). For more information, contact Laurel Stanley at firstname.lastname@example.org or 716-372-4123.
