ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Six graduating seniors who were part of the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program while attending St. Bonaventure University were commissioned as second lieutenants in a ceremony on campus Saturday, May 11.
Guest speaker for the event was Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. John Boccieri, commander of the 910th Airlift Wing’s 773rd Airlift Squadron in Youngstown, Ohio, and a 1992 graduate of St. Bonaventure. Boccieri, a stand-out baseball player in college, assumed command of his squadron in June of 2012 after serving two years as a congressman representing Ohio’s 16th District. Prior to being elected to Congress, he served Ohio as a state legislator and state senator.
Boccieri had four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and served at the Pentagon for two years.
Saturday’s ceremony was followed by the Silver Dollar Salute, a tradition in which newly commissioned second lieutenants hand a silver dollar to the first soldier who salutes them.
