St. Bonaventure University junior Dyanna Moreira has been honored with a 2017 Independent Sector Student Community Service Award.
Only 10 students from New York’s 108 institutions that belong to the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities received the award, which recognizes students for their leadership and community service. Winners each received a $500 scholarship and were celebrated at a reception March 6 in Albany.
Moreira, of Brooklyn, was nominated by Bridget Kehrer, director of St. Bonaventure’s Higher Education Opportunity Program, who’s known Moreira since she arrived on campus in 2014.
“Dyanna immediately distinguished herself by her enthusiasm, energy and participation in various community service projects and the Latin American Student Organization,” Kehrer said.
A psychology major, Moreira has volunteered at SBU’s Warming House soup kitchen in Olean, and has been a peer mentor, peer coach, orientation leader, and student ambassador.
“She has become such a staple in the prospective student hosting program that she is now in charge of training the other hosts,” Kehrer said. “And Dyanna is now the lead student ambassador for the admissions office, assisting with the planning and coordination of summer 2017 freshman orientation.”
“I’ve been so impressed with her leadership, dedication and professionalism,” Kehrer added.
Kehrer admitted that Moreira struggled her first semester in the classroom, “but I have seen exceptional growth. … She took what she learned from that experience and vowed to make academics her first priority.”
Kehrer said Moreira’s positive attitude and outgoing personality are “true assets to our institution. Her work ethic and willingness to succeed have been proven again and again.”
This is the second straight year a St. Bonaventure student has won the Independent Sector Student Community Service Award. David Bryant of Utica, now a senior, was honored in 2016. Bryant is also a HEOP student.
