As we age we undergo gains as well as losses during the adult years. The focus of this course is twofold: to emphasize what individuals can do to promote successful aging and to highlight what individuals can do when faced with the challenges of the declines and diseases that occur during the adult years. This course will examine adult development and aging in four domains: biological and physical, cognitive, personality, and social. In the domain of biological and physical changes, the impact of age related changes in the brain and nervous system on psychological functioning will be examined. Age related changes in the cognitive domain will examine changes in thought, memory, perception, and attention. In the domain of personality, the course will examine the impact of aging on perceptions of self, moral values, and sociability. Lastly, in the social domain, the course will examine our relationships with others, specifically how aging impacts relationships.
