This course is a seminar for majors in art history that is designed to engage students in the exploration of theoretical questions and critical perspectives that bear on our understanding of visual art and culture. Although the specific approaches used may vary the basic aim of the Advance Seminar is to address the issues and assumptions informing contemporary debates regarding the visual image. Topics may include the concept of representation, the notion of style, the relation of form, content, and context, and the role of theory in art.
