Vocal ensemble Madrigalia to perform 'Magic, Spells and Mystery' at St. Bonaventure's Quick Center

Apr 10, 2017 | madrigalia

Rochester-based vocal ensemble Madrigalia will present the eighth and final concert of the 2016-17 Friends of Good Music season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, at St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Arts Center.

Titled “Magic, Spells and Mystery,” the program is “sure to put a spell on you,” said Cary Ratcliff, the ensemble’s musical director.

“With words and secret knowledge, humans have long tried to control their world, their destiny, and the objects of their desires,” said Ratcliff. “This old-world view and our wish for magical shortcuts die hard, as evidenced by this fun program of magic, spells and mystery.”

The program includes a wide-ranging repertoire, from a Cuban spell to kill a snake, to Donovan’s version of the William Butler Yeats poem “The Song of Wandering Aengus,” to a rendition of the 1956 Screamin’ Jay Hawkins hit “I Put a Spell on You.”

Madrigalia is composed of 18 highly skilled vocalists from the Rochester area. Known for its beauty of sound and artistic excellence, the ensemble presents unique and challenging programs of choral music built around intriguing themes. Their music draws from all times and places, spanning the riches of classic choral styles, the vast range of compelling music being written in our time, and the intriguing musical expressions of cultures throughout the world.

A proud member of Chorus America, the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, and the Greater Rochester Choral Consortium, Madrigalia promotes the appreciation of choral singing to diverse audiences through performances, recordings, broadcasts, outreach, and the commissioning of new music.

This performance is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program, with support from the New York State Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and administered by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.

For tickets and information, call the Quick Center Box Office at (716) 375-2494.

For this and all other performances, the museum galleries will open one hour before the start of the performance and remain open throughout the intermission. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m., to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Museum admission is free and open to the public year round.
