New student space at the Quick Center for the Arts has a new name — The Loft

Feb 21, 2012 |

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The new creative and study space for students and faculty at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts has a new name, courtesy of a student naming campaign. The name – The Loft – is an apt description of the third-floor room at the arts center, said Ludwig Brunner, interim executive director.

The large space, with capacity for 70 to 80 people, is available for art installations, performance art, graffiti art, mini recitals, movie screenings, poetry slams, play readings, club meetings and as a study center.

“Students have already started using the space since it became available in January, and with a new name I think they are truly making it their own,” Brunner said.

He noted that a couple dozen students are using The Loft as a weekday study space and it already has been booked for a number of events.

An open house was held Jan. 26 and launched a naming campaign in which students were asked for suggestions. Those ballots were narrowed down to three — The Loft, A Place to Be, and The Quick Stop. A second round of voting by students declared The Loft the winner. The new name will appear on graffiti art tiles in the third floor hallway of the arts center as a colorful greeting to the floor.

The Loft is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and as a study space from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It can be booked for events from 4 to 9 p.m. weekdays, and is available for studying when there is no event taking place.

To reserve the space or for more information, contact Miranda Earley, museum educator, at 375-2479.
