Bring your students to the Quick Center this spring and we'll take their inquisitive and curious minds across the globe for a firsthand look at the art and culture of Southeast Asia, with spotlights on China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, India, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
Visiting students will tour our newest exhibition, Kimono: Japan's Woven History, featuring all different types of kimono. The exhibition offers objects and educational information examining the traditions and history of these beautiful textiles.
Our tour complements and reinforces your work in the classroom with activities that draw on various subject areas:
Literature & Writing
Students will learn to write haiku, a very short form of Japanese poetry, and learn about Kabuki theater, creating their own mask design.
Geography & Map Skills
Students will learn of the factors contributing to the unique geography of Asia and the characteristics of various regions.
By solving Chinese tangram puzzles and practicing origami, the art of paper folding, students will enhance their understanding of geometry.
Cultural Awareness & Appreciation
Tours may be scheduled to coincide with the celebration of various holidays and festivals rooted in Asian culture, such as Taiwan's Lantern Festival (Feb. 11-19), Pakistan's Basant Kite Festival (Feb. 13-17) or Japan's Cherry Blossom Festival (March & April), or many others. These tours may include special art activities, programming, follow-up classroom activities and more.
