St. Bonaventure University takes an active role in the national initiative to motivate and inspire students to excel in STEM disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We are engaged in a number of outreach activities aimed at promoting STEM initiatives among area school students and to ensure that educators are better equipped to teach STEM subjects.
Why? Because the future demands it. The National Science Foundation notes that scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.
The STEM Education Coalition notes that STEM occupations are projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, and that wages in these occupations are generally higher than the median for all occupations.
"The future of the economy is in STEM, that's where the jobs of tomorrow will be,” said James Brown, director of the STEM Education Coalition. Estimates are that between 2012 and 2022, there will be an increase of about 1 million STEM-related jobs.
