St. Bonaventure University has named David S. Kassnoff interim dean of the Russell J. Jandoli School of Communication.
A School of Communication faculty member since 2009, Kassnoff will take over on Jan. 12, 2018, for Dr. Pauline Hoffmann, who announced in June she was stepping down after five years as dean to return to the classroom.
Kassnoff is a 1979 alumnus of St. Bonaventure. In 2016, he earned his master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from SBU.
“We are so happy that David has chosen to take on the role of interim dean of the Jandoli School of Communication at this time,” said Dr. Joseph Zimmer, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “As an alum of the school, he will be able to use his vast experiences in industry, journalism and communications to forward the mission of the school as we search for a permanent dean.”
A search committee headed by Dr. Chris Mackowski is working to identify and select the permanent dean, Zimmer said.
“Having David step forward at this time will allow us a bit more time to identify the ideal person who can start with us in fall 2018,” Zimmer said.
Kassnoff has also taught in journalism, strategic communication, digital media, and public relations programs at three other institutions: SUNY College at Brockport, St. John Fisher College, and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Prior to his academic career, he worked in community affairs and corporate communications for Eastman Kodak Company, where he created communication strategies and messaging for three CEOs and many senior executives. He also created Kodak’s online e-Magazine and the Kodak Close-Up series of video podcasts.
Kassnoff is the author of four non-fiction titles for teenagers published by Rosen Publishing, and co-author with Laurie Mercer of “PR + Empowerment: Influencing Your Brand When You’re Not in the Room.”
He has received an Award of Excellence (2002) from Communication Arts for an online interactive feature, “Sleeping Giants,” and a Silver Anvil Award (2005) from the Public Relations Society of America.
In 2016, he received the Deborah A. Henretta Award for Outstanding Achievement in Integrated Marketing Communications from St. Bonaventure University.
Kassnoff began his journalism career at the Finger Lakes Times in Geneva and worked at the Connecticut Post Newspapers in Bridgeport, Conn. He is active on the diversity committee of the Public Relations Society of America chapter in Rochester.
