The School of Education at St. Bonaventure University has been reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) through the year 2022.
“Accreditation by NCATE is the standard of excellence for schools of education,” said Dr. Nancy Casey, interim dean of the School of Education at St. Bonaventure. It means the school has successfully completed a comprehensive and rigorous NCATE review, and ensures that St. Bonaventure continues to prepare its teacher, school leader and counseling candidates to make a difference in P-12 schools, she said.
Dr. René Hauser, associate professor of education at SBU and director of its Differentiated Instruction program, served as accreditation coordinator.
“The accreditation process brings together all faculty and staff in the School of Education to help ensure that each and every student is meeting high standards and is ready for their chosen career,” said Hauser. “Accreditation by NCATE means that the School of Education at St. Bonaventure University has met a set of strict standards and that our graduates are well-prepared through rigorous academic preparation and meaningful field experience.”
In its accreditation review, NCATE recognized St. Bonaventure for maintaining a high “field experience” standard. “We have very strong partnerships with schools and agencies to afford opportunities for our students to have a wide variety of supported, structured field experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels,” said Hauser.
The NCATE accreditation is a show of confidence in the school and its mission, said Dr. Joseph Zimmer, provost and vice president of academic affairs, and former dean of the School of Education. “It’s great to see my colleagues in the School of Education once again commended for their commitment to high quality, experience-rich teacher, school leader and counseling preparation programs,” he said.
Schools and other providers accredited under NCATE standards, as well as those accredited under the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) Quality Principles, are now served by the single specialized accreditation system for educator preparation in the United States, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). More than 900 educator preparation providers participate in the CAEP accreditation system.
