St. Bonaventure University’s Mock Trial Team placed first at the American Mock Trial Association Buffalo Regional Tournament, marking the first time St. Bonaventure has qualified for the national tournament since 1998.
The team of 10 St. Bonaventure students finished 7-1 against other local colleges at Buffalo State Feb. 8-9 and will now compete March 14-16 at the Opening Round Championship Series of the American Mock Trial Association’s national tournament at Miami University in Hamilton, Ohio.
The top six finishers at Miami and seven other regional sites across the country will then advance to the National Championship Tournament in Orlando, Fla., April 11-13.
“Being a part of the team that took first place at the regional tournament is a phenomenal feeling,” said Alexander Noguerola, vice president and tournament director of SBU’s Mock Trial team. “It is great to see all of our hard work and dedication pay off in such an outstanding way.”
In addition to the first-place finish, four members received individual awards for their performances. Outstanding Witness awards went to Nick Taylor, a senior sociology major from Arcade, N.Y., and James Cook, a freshman political science major from Brockport, N.Y., while Outstanding Attorney awards went to Sebastian Bellm, a junior accounting major from Mishawaka, Ind., and Noguerola, a junior political science major from Lowell, Mass.
“It is a humbling experience to be considered a perfectly ranked attorney among some great competitors,” Noguerola said. “We competed against some high-quality people and to be at the top of that list is a wonderful feeling and accomplishment.”
The field next weekend includes Stanford, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Cornell, Michigan State, NYU, Syracuse, Xavier, Cincinnati, Indiana and Carnegie Mellon.
“I am looking to see our performance improve and hopefully make it to the National Championships in Orlando,” Noguerola said. “We will be against some tough teams, and I want to see us hold our own and show that Bonaventure is a strong team.”
Dr. Steven Nuttall, professor of philosophy, is the adviser of St. Bonaventure’s Mock Trial Team.
