A St. Bonaventure professor has been selected to co-author a new series about the Civil War.

Savas Beatie announced the debut of the Emerging Civil War Series Nov. 15. The first two titles will be co-authored by Dr. Chris Mackowski, professor in the Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication at St. Bonaventure University and Kristopher White, historian for the Penn-Trafford Recreation Board and a continuing education instructor for the Community College of Allegheny County. “The Civil War is America’s great story,” Mackowski said. “What makes it so vital, though, is that it’s not just the story of us as a nation, it’s the story of us as individuals – real people with real hopes and fears and dreams and flaws. Telling those very human stories in the context of that vital national story sits at the heart of this series.”

The five-book series will serve as an overview of the war for a general audience. Mackowski said the aim is to grab the reader’s attention and get them interested in finding out more information.

“This series is not only for a general audience, even Civil War buffs can also learn something new,” Mackowski said.

The series is taking a new approach on how the information is presented by including primary sources along with lots of pictures to connect the main points addressed.

““Emerging Civil War” brings with it a strong brand that suggests a fresh twist on the Civil War,” Theodore P. Savas, managing director, said. “This is exactly what we envision the series will embody.”
